…to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive…
R. L. Stevenson
How many times are we fixated with the outcome rather than the process of getting it done. A hundred percent of the time we all are in the present but we always fail to live in it. I even had a limiting belief before that living in the moment is bad, it is just for those who have no dreams and no ambition, but clearly I had it wrong, and the more I try to live in the future the more I compromise my present experience. I also have to mention that some tend to live in the past, wishing they could go back and change how things turns up. I believe that there is no right or wrong approach as long as it works in our favor and benefits. I usually think about the future because that is where my goals and dreams are, while I also got stuck in the past ruminating how I could avoid the mistakes I ever committed, how can I said this instead of that.
How can one be mindful of the steps that he is taking on the process of going from point A to point B? I cannot blame anyone for thinking that the moments in life that counts are those big moments. The time you get your first million, the moment you get that promotion, the moment you say your I-dos’ in the altar (I think you already get what I mean). We are pressured in the outcome hence we can’t even catch that we are sometimes sabotaging ourselves.
Accept that it is normal to feel uncomfortable, make a mistake, and have obstacles, sometimes we are too afraid to start doing something because we are afraid to fail so we end up doing something that will make us feel good in the moment but will not take us to point B. #InstantGratification. Doing that thing that you have been avoiding to do must be the first thing that you have to do.
It is great to have a role model and a mentor, but you should never be a copy cat. We love comparing ourselves to others, not realizing we have different experiences, priorities, goals and circumstances. It is not bad to get best practices, but remember that you can never use the map of New York City when you are navigating Japan.
Pause. Every time that you feel like you are overwhelmed, pause for a moment. Take that sanity walk or jog. Use your senses to feel the moment, try to do a body scan. (There are some guided meditation that you can find whatever digital streaming app you are using.)
Remind yourself that you are okay, that you won’t die if you finally pitch in your idea in the board room, that it is okay to say what you really feel, the worst that you can get is being laughed at, but the feedback that you will get can be golden or what if, what you have in mind is the idea that they are all been waiting for, we will never know unless you spill the tea.
I always remind myself that the goals that I set for myself must hone me to be an effective version of me in the present, in this moment. I can’t take back the time that I have right now and it is only wasted if I don’t make the most of it. Stephen Covey said that begin with the end in mind, that didn’t mean that we have to just jump to the end of the stick without navigating the parts of it. Beginning with an end mind means to me that you have a clear vision of the destination, and that should help you realize what you have to be in the present moment to get to where you want, not being overwhelmed in what’s ahead.
An interesting discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you should publish more about this subject, it may not be a taboo matter but typically people dont discuss these subjects. To the next! Many thanks!!
